From the rugged terrain of Grindrod, BC, this Canadian desert racing standout has carved out an impressive reputation in SCORE's premier off-road competitions. Making his mark in the grueling Pro UTV NA class, Backus demonstrated exceptional skill and determination during the legendary 2019 SCORE Baja 1000, where treacherous conditions and torrential rains made the world's toughest off-road race even more challenging.
Piloting his #1902 Polaris RZR XP1000 alongside co-drivers Tyler Backus and Shane Hanson, he battled through extreme mud and brutal conditions that claimed half the field, ultimately securing a hard-fought third-place class finish. This podium achievement at the 52nd BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 showcased his ability to adapt and perform under the most demanding circumstances in desert racing.
The race proved particularly grueling that year, with decades-worst weather conditions testing even the most experienced competitors. Backus's successful navigation of the 1,000-mile Baja Peninsula course, combined with his strategic team approach and mechanical reliability, established him as a formidable presence in SCORE's competitive UTV division and cemented his reputation among North America's elite desert racers.
Some of the toughest and most competitive races during the 55th BFGoodrich
Tires SCORE Baja 1000 were in the buggy classes. In Class 1 seven
competitors who are equally matched not only had to out-race each other,
but also had to contend with a brutal course that took out nearly half of the
competitors. In Class 10, however, the competition was so tough, the race leaders
changed hands more often than in any other class, and ultimately came down to
the wire as to who would cross the finish line first. Read More
